Position title : SRP MANAGER, OVERSEAS PROGRAMMING

Position location : Ottawa

Reports to : Senior Manager, Campus Engagement and SRP

Contract : 2 years (renewable)

WUSC is the leading Canadian NGO working with students, faculty and college and university leaders on issues of international engagement. A central component of WUSC’s strategic plan is continued delivery and expansion of our programming on Canadian campuses with increased focus on student programs and initiatives that underscore our unique relationship with the Canadian post-secondary community, and contribute to the internationalization of Canadian campuses.

Since 1978, WUSC Local Committees have sponsored student refugees to resettle in Canada and pursue their higher education through the Student Refugee Program (SRP). WUSC is the only organization in the world that combines resettlement with post-secondary education. This unique sponsorship model includes vital support for at least 12 months upon arrival in Canada.

Nature and Scope :

Reporting to the Senior Manager - Campus Engagement and the Student Refugee Program, the SRP Manager, Overseas Programming has responsibility to manage the overseas components of the SRP, as well as SRP Alumni engagement and the Refugee Study Seminar. More specifically, the manager will :

1. Manage the overseas components of the SRP :

  • Oversee the management of partnerships with international agencies (e.g. UNHCR, IOM), WUSC field offices, immigration officials, Canadian post-secondary institutions and others who support the selection, placement and immigration processing of sponsored students.
  • Oversee the overseas recruitment and application process of SRP students.
  • Liaise with stakeholders, referral groups, Citizenship and Immigration Canada offices overseas, and other agencies to ensure oversight over the immigration process of selected sponsored students.
  • Coordinate with team members responsible for in-Canada SRP programming to ensure the effective implementation and placement of the sponsored students on Canadian campuses.
  • Ensure that the Senior Manager, Campus Engagement (CE) & SRP is informed of significant issues and developments with regards to the program and offer recommendations as to possible courses of action.

    2. Manage Engagement and Outreach with SRP Students and SRP Alumni

  • Work closely with the Senior Manager, CE & SRP in the conception, design and implementation of new initiatives that will enhance SRP students’ integration, such as a mentorship program for SRP students.
  • Oversee the engagement of alumni in the development of pre-departure and post-arrival curriculum for new SRP students.
  • Identify other opportunities to support SRP students and engage with SRP alumni.

    3. Oversee the implementation of the Refugee Study Seminar

  • Develop a concept note and work with partners to secure new grant funding for the Refugee Study Seminar.
  • Coordinate with SRP, CE, volunteer mobilization, and communications teams within WUSC to put all systems in place for a 2018 Refugee Study Seminar (budget, processes, partnerships, communications, volunteer mobilization procedures, administration, etc.).

    4. Team management

  • Manage and supervise the team members responsible for overseas SRP programming.
  • Oversee the management of team databases, ensuring proper usage and data maintenance within the team.
  • Develop and maintain SRP workplans, monitoring and evaluation systems and develop program reports for donors and WUSC management.

    5. Program Development (PD) :

  • Work closely with the Senior Manager of Campus Engagement and the Student Refugee Program in the conception, design and implementation of new SRP initiatives to ensure sustainability and growth of the program.

    6. Collaborate with the Campus Engagement unit, Communications, Fundraising and other staff in the implementation of the public engagement (outreach) and fundraising strategies :

  • Ensure team collaboration and participation in SRP training and capacity building activities for WUSC Local Committees.
  • Ensure that team all activities are coordinated and coherent with the broader team and organizational goals (membership engagement activities, fundraising activities, conferences, etc.).
  • In collaboration with the Communications unit, generate material for various audiences and stakeholders for print, electronic and other media.

7. Other :

  • Support the coordination of the International Forum programming.
  • Represent WUSC and the SRP at national or international conferences as required.
  • Keep abreast of the international refugee situation, global resettlement priorities and the Canadian Government’s policies as they pertain to refugee resettlement.
  • Occasional international travel for student selection or stakeholder relations.
  • Contribute to the expansion of the SRP.

    Qualifications :

  • Master’s degree in international development, refugee studies or related field
  • A minimum of 7 years related experience in progressively more responsible positions, including proven personnel management experience and excellent project or program management
  • Solid work experience in :

    o developing and managing effective partnerships

    o refugee and/or immigration issues

    o Canadian immigration law and regulations

    o program monitoring and evaluation

    o budget management

    o workshop facilitation, training delivery and tool development

    o volunteers and youth
  • Demonstrated human resources and team management skills
  • Flexibility, with a strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit to accommodate high levels of responsibility and multiple priorities
  • Passion and commitment to gender equality and youth empowerment
  • Preference for working in a team environment
  • Knowledge of the internationalization goals and capacities of Canadian colleges and universities an asset

    Languages :

  • Complete fluency, oral and written in English essential and French preferred.
